Artificial intelligence has moved from a promising concept to a daily reality across cardiovascular medicine. Researchers at Mass General Brigham have predicted that AI will redefine cardiovascular trials — automating event adjudication across imaging, electronic records, and wearables, cutting costs, and shifting endpoints from late clinical events to early imaging-derived biomarkers. How AI Is Changing the Research Pipeline

In the INVESTED trial, a natural language processing model developed at Mass General Brigham adjudicated heart failure outcomes with 87 percent concordance with the human clinical events committee — demonstrating the model’s generalizability in a multicenter setting across the United States and Canada. On the enrollment side, AI-enabled screening nearly doubled the rate of enrollment compared to manual screening in a heart failure clinical trial, with researchers noting that AI could potentially halve the time required to complete enrollment without introducing racial, gender, or ethnic bias in patient selection. Faster, more accurate trials mean better evidence reaching physicians sooner. 

What This Means for Patients Seeing a Cardiologist Today

For patients, AI’s most meaningful contribution right now is earlier, more accurate detection. AI is transforming echocardiography by improving diagnostic precision and efficiency across the full workflow — from image acquisition and analysis through to final interpretation. Conditions that might previously have gone undetected until symptoms appeared are increasingly being identified at earlier, more treatable stages.
